Should I be worried?

For the past week, Caleb has been making these weird head/eye movements. He turns his head to the right and his eyes go left. Then he seems to sort of snap out of it.  I've only noticed it one time when he wasn't eating. I thought it was cute and that he was just giving me a sideways look. We were playing on the floor and he was crawling around. He seems to do it often when he's eating (and I'm not sure if he just does it when he is eating or if that just happens to be where we notice it because he is right in front of us- when he's playing, he is not always facing me and so perhaps I miss it?) Anyway, this was yesterday morning at breakfast. He did it once and so we got out the camera in case he started doing it again... and he did. What do you guys think? Is this something that I should be worried about or should I just brush it off as something new he has "learned" to do? I don't want to worry myself over nothing. Have any of you seen this before?

Thanks!!!

This video is from yesterday morning at lunch.

This is just a bit from lunch this afternoon. He did it twice at the beginning (which was caught in the video) and then 3 more times at the end of eating (but after I had turned off the camera).

  1. It could be something he just does, like my kids grinding their teeth when they first got them. But if you are worried about it, I would for sure tell the Dr and maybe bring the video.

  2. From my point of view it looks like he is doing two things. He is being distracted by something over to the side that he wants to look at, whether it be a window outside, a tv on (or something else making noise), etc. The next is that a couple of times it looked to me like it was an almost involuntary reaction and then followed by some other questionable movements, like the head bobbing. I would watch him for another week or so to see if it continues and then call the doctor if it does.

  3. There is nothing really but the wall in that direction. There is the window directly in front of him, behind me. However, he's done this no matter where we are- outside, in the car (I fed him while sitting in the parked car, in my lap), at my in-laws. He always does it in the same direction, no matter where we are. Also, he's done it at every meal since Friday. Thanks for the comments. I really do appreciate it. Hopefully, it's nothing... I'll keep observing him.

  4. Ok the only thing I can think (and this is knee jerk reaction) is seizures. Mainly because it looks like he can't help it and it takes him a bit to respond to you when you call his name. Again my knee jerk reaction! I am not a doctor but it does seem similar to absence seizures. But please don't panic just take him to the dr. Let them check him out. Could just be nothing some weird childhood tick.

  5. I'm a Registered Nurse and work as an elementary school nurse. I would get this checked out by a Dr. ASAP and don't wait. My first thought was it's an absence seizure as well, but only a Dr. can diagnosis this for sure. You'd rather know that not know what exactly is going on and if it is a seizure disorder, there is medicine to control for that. I've had students who have seizure disorders who've been weaned off their meds and then they don't have further seizures. Each case is very individual. Either way, I'd get it checked out by a Pediatrician ASAP.

  6. I came across your blog from Renae Eddy's, she is a good friend. I've got four kids myself. I would DEFINITELY take him to the doctor, and I am not one to run to the doctor at all. The second I saw it I thought seizure right away. Take your video of him doing it, just in case for some weird reason the doctor isn't able to see it.

  7. Does he always make noises like what I saw in the video? It does seem involuntary at times. I am not sure about seizures because with absence seizures the child would not respond at all to prompts, like their name being called. It may be just a goofy behavior he seems to be stuck on at the moment but I would not waste any more time and go have the little guy checked out. He sure is a cutey!

  8. You don't know me from Adam, but your post popped up on my Facebook through Jeslene and Kati. My husband (surgeon) and sister (nice nurse) both say that you should get him checked out. It may be something simple but better safe than sorry. Good luck!
